Designed in the 1980's by the world's leading mouthpiece designer Arnold Brilhart, the Graftonite line of mouthpieces incorporates revolutionary materials to achieve ease of tone production with a wide range of tonal colors.

The facing or tip opening is the measured gap between the tip of the mouthpiece and the reed and changes the resistance of the mouthpiece:

Open facing: The reed is further from the tip of the mouthpiece. This creates more resistance. A lower strength reed is recommended to allow the reed more space to vibrate.

Close facing: The reed is closer to the tip of the mouthpiece creating less resistance. A stronger reed is recommended allowing the reed to vibrate in a smaller amount of space.

Medium facing is a compromise between the two.

Pros: Plays well in all registers with a nice tone. Cons: Nothing I do not like about this mouthpiece. Pros: The mouthpiece which is provided with a new sax is often pretty poor unless the sax itself is a professional instrument. I have purchased a Rico Royal tenor sax and alto sax mouthpiece from this supplier and and in both cases the effect was startling. These mouthpieces are very good and they are excellent value for money. Cons: The mouthpiece is a little unforgiving (for a beginner) but with a little perseverance the sound it produces is clear and crisp. Other: If you have bought a cheapish student sax, treat yourself to one of these mouthpieces as soon as you can but do compare the openings and playability with other mp's, on the net before purchase in order to make sure that you get the right Rico Royal for you.
